Local Organizations and Urban Governance in East and Southeast Asia: Straddling state and society (Routlede Studies on Civil Society in Asia)

This edited collection brings together enterprising pieces of new research on the many forms of organization in East and Southeast Asia that are sponsored or mandated by government, but engage widespread participation at the grassroots level. Straddling the state-society divide, these organizations play important roles in society and politics, yet remain only dimly understood. This book shines a spotlight on this phenomenon, which speaks to fundamental questions about how such societi (more…)

Benny Prasad: Musicianary

August 30th, 2009 No comments

We were so blessed to have attended the 31st Anniversary of Covenant Evangelical Free Church at Suntec City today and was able to witness a performance by Benny Prasad, the most widely travelled Indian musician. To date, he has visited 218 countries and performed before presidents and parliaments and on many stages, including 2007 Military World Games, 2006 FIFA World Cup and 2004 Olympic Games!

But what is the big deal about Benny? OK, aside from the fact that he's suppose to be dead 18 years ago, he is a self-taught guitar player and has designed a guitar the world has never seen: A guitar with bongo (and he received a doctorate degree from University of New York! --if I'm not mistaken...). But most importantly, his purpose of travelling is to share the good news of Jesus Christ. Watch this video and learn more of Benny's ministry.

From a cursed to blessed life, from sin and shame to righteousness: Benny Prasad's life story (a walking miracle) is a genuine revelation of how good our God is!

In here and there, I received two comments similar in toto from one Winston Frobs. While I absolutely agree with François Marie Arouet—or Voltaire, take your pick—when he said that I may not agree...

Allow us to shanghai some passages/lines from some of our favorite musical lyricists / elliot smith > sun kil moon’s mark kozelek > nick drake. Pensive…soothing..lulling… like good autumn music should be. Topnotch shit. Music is one of our wellspring of references…in fact it is DNA. Yes, music is the DNA of our work…as Ben Hecht puts it, They are more than tunes. They are little houses in which our hearts once lived. When we hear them we go visiting.

We should move to Sausalito
Living’s easy on a house boat
Let the ocean rock us back and forth to sleep
.

Yes,  to  dance beneath  the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves

I want to be your happiness
I want to be your common sense pain
Wrap your head in a picket fence
.

Rebuild after the hurricane

I laid down my head
With my new love beside me, her radiant light
I faded away, along with my thoughts
Like a dream and I trail off mystically

.
chasing dreams
I hummed good sweet explosions.  sweet nothings

.
so I looked for your eyes and the waves looked like
they’d pour right out of them
.

And each night I look up
At a bright honeymoon
It sure seemed built to last
.
.
.

.

.

birds gather ’round my window
fly with everything i love about the day
flowers, blue and gold and orange
.

.

rise with everything i love about the day

.

.

.

Thoughts of leaves in autumn
Falling from the trees
Thoughts of horizon tree tops
Leading to the sea
This was our season

.

.

Her head lay back in blankets soft white down
Her hair warm Autumn colours, floating
.

Our days were classroom poems, true young love
some nights we roar like lions, some we coo like doves

.

Thoughts of rain at sunset
Clouds of rainbow blue

.

Thoughts of sun on sand dunes
Where the seabirds flew
This was our season
.

.
Thoughts of springtime rainfall
Touching flowers that bend

Thoughts of wind in willows
Days that never end
This was our season

Like warm sun rays
You’re turning into
wind sails on cool bays
I’m watching for you
.

.
does it now seem worth all the color of skies
to see the air through painted eyes
to look through panes of shaded glass
.

see the stains of winters grass
.

.
Will you be here with me my love
When the warm sun turns to ash
And the last tide disappear
All darkness near
.

.
Wind’s blowing now with all its might
Sunrise on a choppy blue sea
Waving back at you
.

.
Time hanging from a clothespin
.

.
Take me home, my love
Take me home today
Take me home with you today
.

.
.
I am mist, you are steam,
w e  a r e  c l o u d s

.
We are drifting away, drifting   a  w  a  y
to one of many heavens where blue light prevails
.

w e   c o u l d   s l i p   a w a y
wouldn’t that be better?
me with nothing to say
.

.
And you in your autumn sweater
.
You in your autumn sweater
You in your autumn sweater
You in your autumn sweater

.

{ END }

1 Corinthians 2

1 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.
2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling.
4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power,
5 so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power. Wisdom From the Spirit
6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
7 No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9However, as it is written:
No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him
10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.
13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.
14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15 The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment:
16 "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
