The A-Team (2010)

Hollywood is fast becoming like the sari-sari stores in the Philippines. You open up a barbeque stand on one corner, another puts up the same type of service across the street several days later. Someone tries on an ukay-ukay business and several would follow suit. It is a copycat world.

Not long ago I watched Losers, a so-so film about military men who were framed by their own government. They turn mercenaries and go on a suicide mission to clear their names. Stop, rewind, replay and that is what we get with The A-Team only that The Losers start with L and A is A.

This is a major upgrade of The Losers. Instead of Zoe Saldana we get Jessica Biel (hotter). In place of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Liam Neeson (C'mon who would ever go up against him, remember, Taken?). And several other cast members who are better like the guy from Hangover (Cooper), the guy from District 9 (Copley) and a mixed martial artist taking over for Mr. T (Rampage).

Mind you, this is a mindless action flick. The highlight of the film includes a helicopter going 360, a tank flying itself, and some elaborate action sequences that come with commentary. These are the type of boxes I don't regret opening when in the first place, I know what I am getting. The A-Team does not disappoint with its imagination but only falters in plausibility. With the action taking a front scene you do not mind the used up plot, the mailed in acting when no acting is actually required, and the otherwise useless eyecandy. On second thought, Saldana showed more skin. The A-Team while not garnering an A is near a B.

Celebrating on the Road

June 28th, 2010 No comments
A yearly birthday blog is long overdue. A sudden business trip to Metro Manila and an otherwise expected empty wallet laid an uneventful 31st birthday.

I am a birthday whores. I like to spend it with large groups preferably on the beach singing until the wee hours of the morning to Barry Manilow songs. that's no the only complication - I also have different groups of friends. There's the homebrewed friends, the office pals, the high school buddies, the Smartbrands tropa, the Dota playmates and some other friends in between.

The last birthday I had was different from the rest. It as the first time I spent in a zip code other than 4400. I did not invite any friend to any gathering. And I actually celebrated it at around 10 PM when I got to Naga. The actual celebration was usual, drinks, singing and a hard hitting hangover in the next morning to cap it all off. Come to think of it, it was no different than the rest.

What am I blabbering about? Actually it's nothing. It's just my natural tendency to blow things out of proportion. If I was online I would be reacting to every birthday wall post greeting on facebook. If my phone wasn't dead for a few hours, I would be replying with lots of thanks. If I was in Naga, even if I was dead broke I will find a way to get some cash and splurge on a drinking marathon with friends, first come first served.

They say 31st is the last day in the calendar. This is pushing the envelope when there are months when only 30,29 or 28 appear. But what is age other than being a number? What is a birth date other than being another budget blasting event? How can it be special when it is spent just like any other day? The questions linger and shall recur on the next 365th day.

Tingog Kan Talapang

June 24th, 2010 No comments
Ta nasa bulod-bulod o kuntod an samuyang harong, dai ko man narisang nagsasakat samuya an mga talapang.

Harani na man an irrigation kun sain nagkakarigos kami karibay an pakol na aaboton kun maaraman o madakop kami kan samuyang tiyaon. Aram an klase kan uran, kun may bagyo, asin aram man kun an uran, si uran na makahilangon. Ta’no daw ta sinabing siring?

Sa uran man, nakagamot an mga ariwaga na kun mag-uran kaipuhan na luyap. Kaipuhan na mahiwas an sakop.

Alagad kun minsan, nabubusbos an langit asin nauula an gabos na tubig, naluluntot an tinanom. Sa mga parasira, bakong magayon an signos kun mauran ta maalon an dagat. Magsaldang man ini o mag-uran.

Marahay gayod hilingon an mga talapang sa panahon na ini na dai ta na daa nasasabotan an panahon. Nagbabago na daa an panahon. Na dapat sanang mangyari, ta an panahon kaipuhan talagang magbago. Kita an nagtataong kahulugan sa mga pangyayari sa satuyang kinaban, orog na an panahon na nabubusbus an langit o nagpapasali an saldang. Kita an nagtataong kahulugan sa mga talapang.

The countdown

June 23rd, 2010 No comments

About a year ago there was this brewing stand-off between the Archdiocese of Caceres and the City of Naga...it was a protracted discussion on how best to celebrate the Peñafrancia Festival. Now that the countdown is about to end, the silence is deafening.
Granted that the schedule for religious aspects for this year's festivities has been posted as early as January, the notice for the "civic component" of it is lacking.
For this year I hope to see the Military Parade with the banners of the Ateneo, the colors of UNC and USANT, the Civic Parade with the performance from USI (parang showtime lang - kidding!) and the diocese accepting concessions on the definition of how to truly celebrate Peñafrancia 2010.

She’s Out of My League

June 23rd, 2010 No comments

A romcom/drama weekend movie -thon with Ondine, Hot Tub Time Machine, Dear John and She’s Out of My League, my drug for dodging stress and grief with Dad at hospital fighting Big C as the family struggles to see eye to eye and letting matters to  God now that he’s 75, it’s been 5 long years Dad as stroke patient, his favorite and eldest granddaughter Una continues to be an angel for him as she divide her college time and as nanny for Lolo. Una will be an excellent nurse instead of an IT student.  The doctor news about his colon few months back by far the hardest blow to the family, meaning, his stay will not be for long, we tested waters with alternative medicines as he’s strong willed but his fragile body tells otherwise.  The universal truth that we cannot be here forever; acceptance is difficult but reality is staring in the face, a consolation perhaps, that the dearly departed are the lucky souls  because  they’ll  not suffer anymore nor be stressed out, no sins or lusts to worry about and neither they’ll indulge themselves in food and booze  that kills.  Dad checked-out of the hospital the other day, a decision which he’s been craving for … to go home, stay home and not be saddled by huge hospital bills, but the family needs to prepare — devote more time and care for the few more months, year perhaps, only God knows.  It is sad but that is life …

***

Switching back to the 4 movies the Jay Baruchel starrer date movie  “She’s Out of my League” left a sweet taste in my lip, the film is your typical, washed up, predictable, forgettable yet deliriously funny movie, my only drawback that is that the F word” rains like sunshine. The Baruchel-Eve mix was a beauty to behold as the rest of the man-child casts were annoyingly funny.  Baruchel is like a young, local version of our iconic Dolphy whose low self esteem character and skinny look makes him a 5, yes, there is a formula in the movie that teach us how to rate people from 1 to 10.  The world even looked down if you struck a date with a hard 10 (Eve) but  everybody is a sucker for happy ending.  The difference from the other flicks is the chick here was for real not the dumb blond or the right girl at your side invisible all along.  Lots of comedic and idiotic stuff perhaps inspired by Judd Apatow films like the ejaculation scene and the grossly pubes shaving.

For first time director Jim Field Smith, the movie was a triumph for the geeks/nerds and all nobody’s out there, it had some good moments and was able to carry momentum till end credits.  If it’s a fantasy go check out Ric Ocasek (5) and Paulina Porizkova (10) and their odd 20+ years affair, they’re just the best example I could come up with because some beautiful women digs geeky guys and good conversation.  If you still can’t get enough go add up some Brit made films such as Love Actually, Notting Hill, or Hitch or ’til you puked in your couch.

Education Level Up

Every time I hear this words my minds pop up like a disclaimer window, pointing out a topic that you should not ignore or let go. Education in the Philippines are now facing a new challenge, why? Graduates are millions in number, but few of them can only find a right job in a right time and become qualified and competent locally and internationally.

It's so hard to pin point who's really to be blame, because in our country, the problem is not only on the people, the government itself has also a big part of it. Well, if you will ask me about it the only reason why we have a poor performance in education is "poverty". If you belong to the top 10 schools from preschool to higher level of your education, you might have a good future! Be realistic, how many of those poor people who can get into a nice, clean, well ventilated, and fully equipped school in the country? very few!

However, it seems like fighting poverty has no end, I am glad to see that our government has plans to improve our education systems.

In the Higher Education they have now forced to implement a memo regarding to the minimum requirements of all college teachers/faculty. What is that? they should have their masters degree and deans should have their doctorate degree on taking this position. (PA VIII, Section 35(1) CHED Memo Order 40 Series 2008)

In the Department of Education, they are planning to prolong the number of years in the elementary and secondary levels. It's also a wise decision but I hope they make sure that the teachers, facilities and rooms are enough to cover the those requirements.

Also, I hope someday our government sponsor trainings for International Certifications for the skill development of our faculties that are in the public schools to follow what ever trend in the market specially in IT.
