Hamlet Act I, Scene III

May 31st, 2012 No comments
It's something that will inevitably happen - lending people money. It's especially difficult with friends. I remember once when someone asked me if I lend my close friends money. My answer is no; it was against my policy so to speak. That's because money complicates things - all things, no matter how much we deny it. Money affects how you trust people. It should ideally be left out of relationships whether friendly or intimate.
It's kinda like losing your virginity and having to explain to your husband or wife how many people you have (or not have) bedded. There's no right answer and for lending to friends there's no perfect outcome.
basta ikaw...
So when a friend asked me for a quick loan, I thought I had a quick answer. Worryingly,  I found that I couldn't blurt out the single syllable most toddlers have mastered - 'No.' I said needed to think it over. The amount wasn't that big; It would have been if I stayed in my old job in Naga, it's not peanuts but it's not something I'm gonna lost sleep over I convinced myself. It wasn't like I was rolling around in dough and it wasn't like my friend is gonna use it to buy a TV or something stupid.
I did fear that somehow it would change the dynamic of our friendship. There's no doubt that my friend did need the money and I really wanted to help out but I tried to think really, really hard why I had decided long ago not to lend money to friends. I wasn't tight fisted and I would trust them with my kid - if I ever have one -  but there was something sacred about that rule.
Oh well some rules are meant to be broken. Gut feeling na lang muna ngayon.
I will set a cap. I will hope to prove wrong hundreds of article advising the same response as my impulse has led me.
I'm sorry Shakespeare, I think my friend deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Of old memories and New China

GABRIEL HIDALGO BORDADO MEMORIES can be a bit tricky, especially for writers who certainly have a way with words. They can burnish them, embellish them with buntings, suffuse them with light and banter, or delete them altogether. d I actually penned those lines in honor of Bienvenido N. Santos who, for a while, stayed in Naga City, mentoring, in the process, a generation of [...]

Impeachment is not the end…

May 30th, 2012 No comments
The 20-3 verdict rendered by the Senate/Impeachment Court against Chief Justice Corona yesterday is not the end. Hopefully, it is the beginning of many things. To name a few: 1. purging the government of corrupt officials (and many of the basis for doing so have been revealed during the impeachment proceedings) 2. encouraging transparency among government officials (hopefully starting with waivers on disclosure of assets and liabilities) 3. greater citizens participation in pursuing investigations and filing cases against corrupt government officials (i hope the anticorruption crusaders were greatly inspired by the conviction) We've only just begun fortifying and strengthening our democratic institutions. Make them work for the people.
