I see you, but you can’t see me!

Squid Proxy, Ip tables, and router access list commands it seems like never ending firewall configurations, support and network management stuff in our school network, well  recently after learning and doing my assignments I got other options that would probably interest you in network deployment with ease and a management system in a very low cost.

I have prepared these equipments:

2 old CPU AMDs with 2 Gig RAM with extran NIC each
   - to separate the (1)Lab/Wifi users and (2)University Admin Networks
Downloaded pfsense image and extract to a DVD

...and as results our network performance and management have improved. I can now easily see ARP tables of our switch to isolate troubles and improve scalability and troubleshooting routines, isolate WIFI/net users and monitor them.

Techies Time!

September 30th, 2012 No comments

I have been teaching networking and data communication concepts for years now and been introducing DNS as IP to name resolution protocol, but now it is time to make use of that concept by simply blocking unwanted sites (parasites) and speed up things like your .Net apps accessing a backend SQL/Windows Server Host.
This explain how:
What is the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file for on XP?

It's your Hosts file. Think of it as a Rolodex for your computer. Its where a computer looks first to translate the URL of a website into a numerical IP address that it can actually use.

For example yahoo.com is http://66.94.234.13

The use of Hosts file can speed things up a bit, but is almost unused today for its original intended purpose.

Today, the Hosts file is mostly used to block access to unwanted websites. Such as ad-servers and sites that are known to contain malicious code (viruses etc). This is done by assigning an IP address of 127.0.0.1 to any unwanted sites. 127.0.0.1 being ones own computer (localhost) which effectively blocks access to the site!

There are several readily availible Hosts file block lists that are used to totally block access to bad, suspect and annoying sites.

MVPS has an excellent HOSTS file block list,
"You can use a custom HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers. This is accomplished by blocking the connection(s) that supplies these little gems." About 30000 sites, ad-servers etc are blocked!

Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

The use of a custom Hosts file is a nice extra layer of security. After all, a website can't infect you if you can not access it now, can it?

Remembering Mayor Jesse

September 27th, 2012 No comments

My version of Mayor Jesse ala Ninoy pose in remembering his 40th death day.  I am hoping that we continue living on his legacy given our tendency to forget important events in our lives.  I am so honored to have served under him and got to know him more (as all Nagueños does).  I maybe sounding like a broken record here but he was just like my father who devoted their lives in public service, Mayor Jesse was truly an inspiration for me, he and my father are my personal heroes.

The very first time I met him was in ’95 with my wife when we were donating to the Carmelite sisters.  I already knew him not because he’s the Mayor but often he visits my father on city related issues with PNR.  There he was at the other end of the bench and I was quite hesitant.  Perhaps sensing my autist personality he made the first attempt to approached and sparked up a small conversation because he noticed my brand new green espadrille.  The next time we’ll speak again will be 6 years later when I entered the government as a utility worker for the LGU IT unit. The 9 years under I’ve known him to be a hands-on leader, clear-sighted official, charismatic speaker, reformist servant leader, a true friend and very frugal with government money.

It’s been 40 days and at times I wonder if my thirteen years in government I should also call it quits … but this is my bread and butter now and life has to moved on wherever it may lead us.

Ubos kun ubos…

September 25th, 2012 No comments
At least two names have recently surfaced to become part of the LP team in Naga City: Atty. Miles Raquid-Arroyo and Punong Barangay Elmer Baldemoro. Atty Miles was a three-term councilor of the city. PB Baldemoro is a multi-awarded barangay captain of Concepcion Grande, Naga City.

It seems the tandem of Atty. John Bongat and Atty. Nelson Legacion is slowly but steadily fortifying a winning ticket that will hopefully ensure the phenomenon "ubos kun ubos, gabos kun gabos" pioneered by former Mayor and SILG Jesse Robredo. They are one or two names short of completing the line up. If this will be settled well, the remaining issue will be the congressional candidate for the 3rd District of Camarines Sur.

The political opponents, on the other hand, is closely monitoring developments. Among the emerging strategy is the fielding of "targeted" candidates for councilors, fielding a specific candidate against a specific incumbent official if only to deprive the LP team of the "ubos kun ubos" slate.

Some names emerging as potential challengers of incumbent councilors are Mrs. Badette Roco, a former city councilor; Dr. Jess Albeus, former Punong Barangay of Tabuco, Naga City; Atty. Anlu Carpio, a practicing lawyer; and and Atty. Adan Botor who previously run for mayor of Naga City in the 2010 elections.

As the date for filing of candidacy draws nearer, I am sure more names will emerge. Let us wait and see.
