Territorial Claims

February 23rd, 2013 No comments
Land seems to be in everyones mind in the past few weeks. Some were good. The Department of Agrarian Reform finally began distributing land titles to the poor farmers, who have been tilling the land for decades without formal recognition.
Then there is the much grander aspiration from the Sultanate of Sulu to get Sabah back. There is of course historical claims for this. It's only unfortunate that the past few presidents were unable or unwilling to follow up or look into them but from memory seems to be too busy falling head over heels in a race to renounce the claim of the Philippines.
A large part of this is probably to maintain the status-quo and friendly status we have with Malaysia. Malaysia, along with the Philippines, is part of the founding members of the ASEAN. We cannot lose any more ally in the ASEAN to China.
Malaysia is not by any means a favored ally. I think, like Singapore, they are arrogant and seems to think their poorer neighbors are somehow beneath them but they are an ally. They have played a role in brokering peace in the south and continues to be an important trade partner.
To a cynic's eye,  the claim of Sultanate appears flimsy and as dated as China's 9 dash dream. True historically, Sabah was part of the Sultanate's dominion but in 1963 the people of Sabah made their wishes clear - they want to be part of Malaysia. This should not mean that we abandon the claim by the Sultanate of Sulu for Sabah. By all account it seems he was cheated by the British and the Spaniards from having a say in regards to the future of his territory - a territory and claim he has entrusted to the national government.
It is this disinterest which the Sultan of Sulu seems mostly aggrieved.
So bring it to court and let this dispute be resolved once and for all. I don't know maybe some compensation is warranted for the aggrieved Sultan but that's another issue for another day.
The current action and stand of the Sultanate of Sulu is unacceptable. True, the government has been remiss of its duties to them but their act of aggression to our neighbor is un-Filipino.
One can only wish Malaysia send his follower's back home safely.
