Skiathos. The Aegean Sea. Part 3

May 28th, 2013 No comments
This is the last part for Skiathos, promise.
There was just so much happening there that I had a problem cutting it down into these bits. Believe me, I could have gone on.
This bit is just going to be about the beach. Woohoo!
Skiathos being a small island is just surrounded by beaches. Some are a bit of a trek to go to, you can drive a 4 x 4 to reduce the time you need to walk but still some can only be reached by boats.
The first bit is the old Port/Club street. It can actually be reached by a bus and is actually part of the town centre.
Near Club street. A bit dangerous when you're drunk I imagine. Pero mababaw lang naman. Haha

From the town there are a lot of boats which you can take to go around the island or if you want to visit the adjacent islands. Which we did - both. It took a whole day for each trip. In both days it started out cloudy but the sun came out a few hours later.
How much yung Yacht, Manong? Ah, eh magkano ho yung lottery ticket. haha
LaLaria Beach. One of the most beautiful beaches is Skiathos.  High tide when we went though. Since I'm a poor swimmer I couldn't reach the cave-ish thing. Sayang!
Amazing. Lalaria. The picture doesn't do it justice and it's farther than it looks

Beach near Kastro. This bit can actually be reached with a 4x4 or if you fancy a long walk

This was the view of the New and the Old Port in Skiathos Town Centre when you're approaching it through the sea.

We took another trip to go around the adjacent islands. Each island has a unique character of its own. First stop was Skopelos. It used to export magical (i.e. aphrodisiac) wines daw which made the island wealthy.

Skopelos has many chapels/churches. All tiny and picturesque. Pero this was my thing for that day - funky chairs. Lazy-ass. haha. I could have stayed in them chairs all afternoon.
Mainland Greece was great too. In the small islands, people were very laid back. It was a trait I thought was confined in islands cause most islands are just like that - probably because people tend to know each other or are related to each other and there was no reason to rush things.

We were surprised by the laid back attitude of the people we met in the mainland as well. Parang Pinoy lang, no rush. Take your time. Enjoy your meal and wine. Maybe we just chanced upon the right laid-back people but it was something I appreciated.

Koukounaries Beach. "It is one of the most beautiful beach in the world." our taxi driver told us on our first day. I haven't been to Boracay eh so I just gave a wry smile. Sige na nga.

Very shallow beach and soft sand. Go on.

Seats with shade. Make them Free seats with shade. Nice and...

some are just inches away from the water. Come on high tide.

It was just the beginning of the peak season so we had the usually crowded beach to ourselves

The locals beach. Our apartment owner/manager Costas told us there is a local's beach where you can watch planes land. Xanemos. We wanted to see it but didn't really plan on getting there as we thought it's going to happen if it does we're not gonna force it. We took a wrong turn somewhere kept going straight and voila....
X marks the spot
There were a few local Greek family. I had to angle it so they wouldn't be in the shot. Respect lang.

Perfect weather. Sunny but not hot.

Tried to play beach volleyball but opted to lie in instead

A bit hard to photoshop the person off (Plus I don't know how to). But this just  highlights how calm the water was.

So that's it for that Greek holiday. We did meet some Greek and English people on the trip. They were mostly about our age group (okay they were younger)  and you can see why Skiathos draws them to the island.
I'd invited them to Boracay but I've never been myself, unlike my friends. I still put in a good word - Hello, tourism ambassador.
I will try to go this October to Boracay and hopefully it will be awesome.

Skiathos Part 2, It’s a dog’s world

May 23rd, 2013 No comments

I want a dog. Who doesn't. They keep you healthy (provided you walk them) and they're always very, very excited to see you. So I dedicate this entry to the greek dogs I met in Greece.
Kinda like PAWS only smaller and more local
It's really a big shame that most Pinoy dogs are chained up which makes them aggressive and noisy. Hence the constant sush-ing when I visit my friends house.
When I started traveling I was surprised to see how friendly most of the dogs are. They sit quietly with their masters outside coffee houses or if they need to be left outside they wait patiently by the door.
I was told this was because they are used to people and are generally quite happy. They are not just bantays but friends. So we didn't hesitate when we were given a chance to walk abandoned dogs. I didn't know who were more excited me or the dogs.

Don't leave. Restaurant owner's dog
Who's a good boy/girl who made this trip more memorable. Yes, you are.

I choose you Yoohoo! that's the name of the dog - really.

Future job. Dog walker.

This dog, which apparently is the neighbour's, kept nibbling on my jeans. Haha

Take me home eyes.

Skiathos (Part 1)

May 21st, 2013 No comments

Greece. I never thought I'd see you. I remember in high school reading about it being the birthplace of democracy and of legends and myths. But cheap flights and apartments has brought me to Greece. Skiathos to be exact.
I would have liked to see Athens and the ruins of Sparta but it's a bit rowdy there due in parts to riots brought about by austerity measures. My friend being a fan of Mama Mia - god knows why - thought of Skiathos.

Anyway, Skiathos has the coziest international airport I've seen. And they have a beach that you can watch airplanes land - awesome (more on that later).

There are even freshly packed
Octupus in the supermarket (Carrefour).

Food is fresh, well the seafood is. It's actually a bit cheaper compared to other EU countries. 8.50 Euros for grilled squids or octopus. There's a whole gamut of restaurants and bars. There's the tourist trap gyros, the sea food only variety and the posh bits that serves everything in between.
It's refreshing experience - traveling. You get a wonderful surprise in every corner and stall.

Octopus cooked in Vinegar.

Frat Coke?
We stayed in an apartment near Troulos- which is nearer to the locals but about twenty minutes away from the town centre. I would have liked to see how the locals lived more but the island being a touristy place; we had a lot of plans.
The owner of the place we stayed, Costas - an apiarist on the side - is really friendly. Being a bit far from Skiathos town it was fairly quiet at nights although he said the peak of season doesn't start until June and then come August about 50,000 cram in the small island of Skiathos.
I thought we came at the right time. There weren't that many people so most of the time we had the beach to ourselves!

Candid shot of my mates on the island.

We got lost a bit but found the best hidden restaurant on the island.

Greek salad. Feta cheese, syempre

It was sunny but not hot. In fact I could still wear my jacket, shades and shorts! Surfer (look) mode on.
The green leafy things taste like green mangoes. Bagoong na lang kulang

Fresh Interns, the May 2013 Circus

May 16th, 2013 No comments

While, we still have to wait before the final PCOS tallies its result it's appearing that this election season has been the year of new faces but mostly minus the hope that usually accompanies them.
We have Aga Muhlach in the 4th District of Camarines Sur; Who probably is as Bicolano as I am Dutch (only when the bill comes). Don't hold your breath for greater things; Don't even expect legislative actions just don't hold your breath 4th Disctrict people - this too shall pass.
When we were praying for an end to political dynasties we should been more specific.
Next, we have Migz Villafuerte and Nancy Binay who has nothing but their surnames to thank for. The only encounter I had with this Villafuerte in Camarines Sur was his odd pictures in CWC and the stories I hear that he owned a surfing shop in the city (the type that sells Billabong and Quicksilver board shorts - really good shorts btw but really pricey!)
What does he plan as Governor. Will he empower the youth of CamSur? I reckon he is more abreast with surfers and the elite yuppies than the padyakero or mangbubulastog around the corner.
When we were praying for youth leaders we should been more specific.
Nancy Binay, on the other hand, seems to be just a waste of a senate seat. Unlike, a fellow political  newbie, Grace Poe was happy to show her mettle in debates. Binay seems content in riding publicity (however, negative) to the top. She is the paragon of dynasties and a failed democracy. It is not her lack of experience or the color of her skin (that btw is irrelevant) which puts her to shame but simply her lack of qualification and moral leadership or even the most basic legal understanding of what it means and what it takes to be a senator in league with Salonga or J. Arroyo.
When we were praying for changes in the Senate, we should have prayed harder
A lot of people, myself included, saw her win as inevitable. Like a disaster looming in the republic.
However, there is a glimmer of hope in Leni Robredo. She could clean up Camarines Sur and share the tsinelas politicis that Jesse left Naga to this part of the country.
When we were praying for hope, we should have included the whole country and not just one district.
